What Are Product Status Badges?

⚡This feature is available on all plans

Product Status Badges let you communicate what stage of development your product idea is in—directly on your product pages. Whether your idea is just a spark or already in production, badges help customers feel involved, informed, and invested.

These badges are optional but can drive more votes, better feedback, and even early sales. Merchants who share their product development stage often build stronger communities and more successful launches.

Why Use?

Adding a status badge builds transparency and trust. Shoppers know exactly what to expect, and they’re more likely to engage when they feel like they’re shaping what comes next.

Here’s what badges can do for you:

  • Set clear expectations (e.g. not ready to ship yet)
  • Spark curiosity and create hype around upcoming products
  • Encourage feedback from early adopters
  • Convert fans into loyal customers by involving them early

  1. Go to the VoteSpark app in the Shopify admin
  2. Go to the ideas page and select your idea
  3. Under Development Status select a status

How to Use?

Here’s a breakdown of what each status means and when to use it:

Status Meaning
Under Consideration You're thinking about making this product and gathering early interest. Use this to test demand.
Planned You've decided to move forward, but production hasn’t started yet. Great for sharing your roadmap.
Candidate This idea is being evaluated among others. Customer votes could push it to the top.
Concept A rough idea is forming. You're gauging interest before spending time or money on development.
In Design You’re working on the product's look, function, and specs. Invite feedback here.
In Development Active work is happening—design is finalized and the product is being built.
Prototype You’ve built a working sample and are testing it out. Time to collect opinions.
Pre-Production Final adjustments are being made before going to mass production.
Manufacturing The product is currently being made. Let customers know it’s coming soon.
Ready for Launch Everything is done and you're prepping the release. Create hype and FOMO here.
Cancelled The product has been shelved. Useful for transparency if you’ve previously gathered interest.
Available The product is now live and can be purchased. Celebrate and show it's a community-backed success!

Best Practices

  1. Be Honest – Only use a badge that reflects your true stage. Customers appreciate transparency.
  2. Invite Engagement – Pair your badge with a poll, question, or CTA like “Help us shape this!” or “Should we offer this in black?”
  3. Use it Strategically – Add badges to your newest, most experimental products first to build momentum.
  4. Don’t Overuse It – Stick to meaningful use cases. If every product has a badge, they lose impact.
  5. Update as You Progress – Change the badge as the product moves from idea → testing → launch. It shows progress and builds excitement.

Use “Under Consideration” and “Prototype” badges to gather feedback and validate ideas before you spend a dime on inventory or production. It’s one of the best ways to de-risk new product launches and build with confidence.
